Karena continues to ‘Get Wiggy With It’!

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

Postgraduate student Karena Moore-Millar, has been working with Glasgow Science Centre for a number of years to pull together an informative and interactive display describing aspects of her research related to wig technology for people with AA and other medical related hair loss.

The work is being displayed for two years (so plenty of time to get along to take a look!) and forms part of the “BodyWorks” exhibition, within the capsule “Body Fights Back”.

The work gives an overview of alopecia and the different materials, and manufacturing techniques, used to produce the wigs used by many living with hair loss conditions. This work looks closely at wigs and shows them inside out. Often with wigs only the fibre/hair is discussed and not the cap or where the materials for the wigs are sourced.

Karena wants to raise awareness through education and public engagement, and recognises the more people interact and learn about socially taboo subjects like wigs and hair loss, the more barriers are overcome and communities see different horizons.

The display at Glasgow Science Centre allows kids and adults alike to interact and learn about wigs and ultimately alopecia.

The display also relates to Karena’s Headsup workshops that she has delivered both in schools and at Kelvingrove Art Gallery during Glasgow Science Week earlier in the year. If you would like to find out more about Karena’s Headsup workshops for schools, please click here

If you are coming to Glasgow for our ‘Big Weekend’ event, if you have time pop into the Glasgow Science Centre for a look at Karena’s work.
